This is really important for any Web Graphic Designer to understand the technical foundation like if you are into print design (i.e. Brochure), you should have some knowledge about printing technologies. Similarly, you need to plan and create your web design interfaces in such a way so that it would go well during the development. You may have a dedicated web designer who converts your design files from Photoshop/Fireworks to html/css as per your instruction. However, it is always better to create a master template in html/css by yourself because you understand the design approach very well starting from design pitch to final design presentation. This is also a big advantage for you to revert back anytime from html/css markup stage to design stage and make some tweaks such as alignments, font sizes, web colors, button sprite images and so on.
Now, you may have questions like ‘Why do we need to do this manually if we can export design files to html/css from adobe fireworks or other similar online/offline tools?”. I keep hearing this question from most of the designers. The answer is yes, you can export design files to html/css when you want to create a quick interactive prototype for client. Secondly, these files would be really big enough in size for viewing on the web and also resulted html/css markups would have a lot of unnecessary markups which are difficult for developers to integrate.
